Position Description

JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the continuous safe operation of the assigned 
department(s), including all aspects of patient care, budgeting, staffing and quality assurance. 
The Director of Nursing provides the framework for the strategic goals of the department. Reports 
to CEO/Administrator.
II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A.  Program Development: The duties of the Director of Nursing shall be in keeping with accepted 
principles of hospital standards. S/he must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, 
provide care utilizing the nursing process, and communicate effectively.
B. Managerial
1. Staff
a.  The Director of Nursing shall organize the nursing functions of the Hospital, delegate duties 
and establish formal means of accountability on the part of subordinates, thereby providing high 
quality nursing care in meeting the patient’s emotional, psychological, social and health teaching 
needs.
b.  The Director of Nursing shall be responsible to the Administrator or Medical Director for the 
high standards of performance of nursing personnel. S/he is required to bring to the attention of 
the Administrator or Medical Director any failure by members of the nursing staff to conform to 
established Hospital policies regarding patient matters, professional standards and maintenance of 
adequate clinical records.
c.  The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required by 
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is possible that requirements may be modified to 
reasonably accommodate disabled individuals. However, no accommodations will be made which may pose 
serious health or safety risks to the employee or others or which impose undue hardships on the 
organization.
d. The Director of Nursing shall provide for:
1)  a nursing education development program consisting of orientation, in-service education and 
continuing education under direction of qualified person(s).
2) monthly department meetings to review and analyze nursing service and develop plans for programs 
and proficiency. Written minutes shall be kept of such meetings.
C. Quality Improvement: Rationale for Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
1. The performance of this function is the reason that the job exists.
2. There are limited employees among whom the performance of this function can be distributed.
3. This function is highly specialized. The employees are hired for the skill/ability to perform 
this function.
4. This function occupies a great deal of the employee's time.
5. Failure to perform this function may have serious consequences.
6. The function was performed by past employees, and is performed by current employees.
III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1.  The Director of Nursing is responsible for the continuous safe operation of the department(s), 
following relevant established standards and guidelines.
2.  The Director of Nursing is accountable to the Administrator and Medical Director for providing 
a
comprehensive, high quality program of excellence, ensuring the patient achieves the best possible 
outcome.

3. Investigation/Risk assessment duties
4. The Director of Nursing:
a.  oversees the ongoing operation of the program, including the establishment and review of goals 
and objectives.
b. designs and implements a Performance Improvement plan in conjunction with the hospital plan.
c.  assumes the authority for implementing change in response to current issues involving quality 
of care.
d. supervises the activities of staff in providing a comprehensive safe program.
e. assesses quality, continuity, and patient outcome.
f.  implements strategies for improvement in collaboration with departmental personnel.
g.  is responsible for the financial management of the department and is fiscally sensitive to 
hospital financial goals.
h. develops strategies for cost containment, expenses, revenue generation, and new programs.
5. The Director of Nursing is also responsible for:
a. assisting and supporting staff in professional growth and development.
b. Assessing skills and knowledge of staff and providing access to skills development, improvement 
and education.
c. operationally carrying out the OBCCD philosophy and mission statement.
d. acting as a professional role model for department personnel.
e.  communicating with appropriate medical staff in the development, implementation and review of 
emergency protocols, program protocols, unit orders, policies, and procedures.
f.  hiring/terminating and evaluation of unit personnel.
g. maintaining personnel files and the staff hospital mandatory attendance lists.
h. participating in continuing education programs and seminars to maintain current competencies 
related to assigned patient populations.
i.  equipment maintenance, contracts, and repair schedules.
j.  conducting staff meetings for the purpose of policy review, quality issues, patient review, 
department
